Picture
IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT:  COVID 19 UPDATE.  UNFORTUNATELY ALL OUR CLASSES HAVE BEEN SUSPENDED TEMPORARILY.  WATCH THIS SPACE FOR THE LATEST UPDATES.
The current Loughborough lipreading class is organised for members of the deaf/hard of hearing
community in Loughborough and district.
Time: 10.30-12.30pm
When: Every Thursday
Where: Meeting Room at Loughborough Library, Granby Street LE11 3DZ

Our class is well attended but we are a friendly group and welcome hard of hearing people as well as those who have some experience of lipreading.

PLEASE NOTE:  We are hoping to be able to return to face-to-face classes in Loughborough in 2021 – watch this space or go to Our Courses for information on our current On-Line Classes.

How the Loughborough Class started!
This class had been available in Loughborough for many years but, for various reasons, classes ceased in 2010. The class members found the class so uplifting and made a huge improvement to their communication skills that they were determined to organise their own lipreading group. The members sought out an ATLA qualified tutor and grants for accommodation, tutor fees etc. and the new course re-started in January 2011!

The Loughborough lipreading group is indebted to Loughborough University, the Rotary Club of Loughborough and Charnwood Borough Council for their pioneering financial support that made the relaunch of our first lipreading class possible. Subsequently classes were sponsored by The Helen Jean Cope Charity, The Henry Smith Charity, the Freemasons Beacon Lodge and the Leicestershire & Rutland Provincial Grand Lodge.

During this time the class has grown to meet increasing demand from the hard of hearing community and the generosity of these benefactors is wholeheartedly appreciated.

As our class sizes continue to grow and it is evident that there is a demand for more classes. However, there is a shortage of lipreading teachers, but with the tremendous support of local organisations, we have been able to fund the professional training costs for an additional lipreading teacher.

Helen Barrow and and Jenny Cluley, our professionally qualified tutors, are planning to expand  lipreading and managing hearing loss courses across the Charnwood and Leicestershire areas. If you would like to know more about our future plans please get in touch.
